COLUMBIA, Mo. – Young adults between the ages of 18 and 25 report the highest rates of substance use and dependence, according to the National Survey on Drug Use & Health. A new study from the University of Missouri found that rural adolescents who engage in prosocial behaviors, such as volunteering and helping others, are less likely to use substances as young adults. Gustavo Carlo, Millsap Professor of Diversity in the Department of Human Development and Family Studies, examined data from surveys given to a group of rural youths from junior high school to young adulthood. Carlo found that prosocial behaviors serve as protective factors against adolescents engaging in risky behaviors. Thus, teens who engage in more prosocial behaviors are less likely to get drunk or use marijuana as young adults. “Prosocial behaviors are good for society and communities, but also they are a marker of moral development,” Carlo said. “Parents want their kids to be kind, selfless, considerate and respectful. We now have evidence that these prosocial behaviors make adolescents less likely to break moral codes and engage in illegal activities like getting drink and smoking marijuana.” The study focused on rural youths because previous research indicates they may [...]

BuckleyBoo is a growing collection of award-winning developmental stuffed toys co-created by a child psychologist and grandma that encourage cognitive development and sequential learning through matching, buckling and unbuckling. Plus BuckleyBoos are adorable and cuddly and are sure to become your little one’s new favorite friend. From the age of 18 months to four-years-old, children will embark on a developmental journey with BuckleyBoo where each mastered task serves as a springboard for the next level of learning: Stage 1: Matching - Children first learn to visually scan and match the brightly patterned ribbons on their BuckleyBoo – polka dot to polka dot, stripe to stripe. Stage 2: Buckling - At eighteen months, children are ready to buckle, but they cannot yet unbuckle, which makes BuckleyBoo, for a time, a toy to be shared between parent and child. At this stage, the child will likely leave all the other buckles in their environment alone; now they have their own buckles with which to play. Stage 3: Unbuckling - At three years, children have both the physical strength and the problem solving skills to buckle and unbuckle and they will happily do for hours on end. Children will also begin to integrate their [...]

Seeking new ways to help make the season less hectic? If so, consider MyRegistry.com, a universal gift registry site, which allows users to add products and services from any retailer (online or brick & mortar), into one concise platform, eliminating the constraints of traditional registries. This site is a perfect tool for creating holiday wish lists for all members of the family, as it stores all of your “must-have” products in one place (rather than have lists and emails with links to gift items all over the place). Using MyRegistry.com becomes a “Direct Link to Santa,” as consumers are able to clearly showcase what they want for the holiday season – ultimately leading to more on-target purchases and fewer returns. MyRegistry.com also has a unique, time and money saving Smart Phone App that allows users to scan the UPC barcode on ANY item in ANY store in the world, receive immediate price comparisons between nearby retailers and the option to purchase on the spot or add to an account for later purchase. Here is a link to video on how site works: http://www.myregistry.com/howtoadd.aspx
