Eating organic food is not only for the rich and famous…try some of these alternatives:
Farmers Market:
No LOCAL doesn’t mean ORGANIC but you will be able to find some organic produce at the market while buying “green” at the same time. Remember, less travel = better for the environment.
CSAs:
This is one of the best things if you can find one in your area. Community Supported Agriculture buy veggies, fruits, meat and eggs from organic farmers and then have them delivered to your door, or to a specific location for you to pick up. Often a carpool system can be arranged and you can choose to do the food pick up once a month for everyone in your area…hey, we all need to work together to make these great programs work.
In my neck of the woods you are given the opportunity to lower the cost of your food basket if you donate 2 days of your labour on the farm. They also ENCOURAGE you to bring your kids. Can I hear a loud YEAH for that idea?
Supermarkets:
Loblaws, for example, has a very large assortment of organic products and they are expanding their product lines all the time. They now have products covering all the basic food groups. They even make cookies, soups and cereal that are fully organic. The prices are very reasonable and the quality is very good. Other supermarkets have jumped on board too. Take a look and see, it is pretty impressive.
Health Food Stores:
Often your local health food store will have products from local farms. Whether organic or local, the choice is a good one. Also, checking out the other selections at the health food store may show you some other things that you want to add to your healthy lifestyle…like Tempeh, Spelt Flour, or soy nuts. Yum!
